The Effects of Smoking on Bodybuilding

Looking to take your bodybuilding endeavors to the next level by finally putting down those nasty cigarettes but need the motivation and some information to give you that push you need to quit? Well then, dear smoker, you are at the right place!

We all know that smoking is bad for you, and that it hampers your training progression. Here is a list of reasons why quitting smoking will help you to get bigger, stronger and fitter.

Smoking Harms Blood Sugar Levels

Nicotine causes a quick, short-term release of blood sugar. This is one of the reasons why smoking often leads to diabetes. It also lowers insulin sensitivity, which means that your body is less able to handle sugar and energy production. The less your body is able to create and utilize energy, the less energy you have during workouts and you get tired quicker. Your strength is also hampered, which means that if you didn’t smoke, you would probably be able to lift heavier weights, for more reps, for a longer period of time, causing a greater stimulus leading to greater muscle gains. Insulin helps to regulate sugar and therefore energy. Because your body is less able to regulate energy, it is less able to perform other functions that require energy that it needs to do to adapt and grow muscle, such as filling muscles with glycogen (the energy in the muscle that enables it to work). Because energy is already lowered in smokers, their bodies take longer to change from a stress-induced state that exercise causes to the anabolic, repairing state that grows muscle and strength. When the body stays longer in this stress-induced state, it will start breaking down muscle as a survival mechanism for energy and nutrients.

Smoking affects Your Breathing and Oxygen Levels

One of the most important roles of the lungs is to take in oxygen from the surrounding air and expel carbon dioxide out. Smoking physically damages the lungs, and also progressively smothers the lungs with tar. Additionally, the lungs are also too busy trying to heal and clean themselves out to function optimally. This greatly reduces the amount of oxygen that the body has at its disposal and the amount of carbon dioxide it can get rid of. This leads to decreased energy and strength, lengthened recovery times needed between workouts and a lowered ability for muscle to grow and adapt from stimulus.

Carbon Monoxide and other Toxins

Smoking increases the amount of carbon monoxide in the blood, along with other toxins. The naked eye can see the different between the blood of a smoker and that of a non-smoker. The blood of smokers is thicker and darker than that of non-smokers. If you think about blood and veins as a road which acts as the body’s delivery system, then the carbon monoxide and other toxins can be seen as elephants in the road that take up a space that is not designed to accommodate them. They get in the way of the other vehicles and stop them from doing their job properly, turning an efficient road into peak traffic on damaged roads. The body is also less able to respond the way we want it to with weight training because it is busy fighting off and trying to cope with these harmful chemicals. For example, these chemicals place an unnecessary burden on the liver and kidneys which are metabolizing and eliminating these chemicals, on top of regulating and creating chemicals needed for growth.

Smokers Get More Sick

Smokers get sick more often than non-smokers, and when they fall ill, they are sick for longer and experience worse symptoms. We all know about the terror of falling sick and being unable to gym, as well as feeling like we are losing all the strength and size gains we have worked so hard to get. Getting sick more often means that your body spends less time in the gym, and less time growing from strength to strength and the worse symptoms mean that you suffer greater setbacks every time you get sick.

Smoking Disrupts Eating and Diet Habits

Eating the amounts of food you need in order to gain mass can sometimes be challenging. The increased appetite from quitting smoking is a great chance to stock up on the extra calories that you need to increase muscle growth. In the long term, smoking will no longer interfere with your appetite and blood sugar levels.

Sleep

Smokers not only need more hours of sleep than non-smokers, but their sleep is of less quality. One reason for this is because their bodies spend a lot of time trying to cope with the demands placed on it from smoking. Another reason is because of the nicotine withdrawal they go through while sleep. Getting better quality sleep as a non-smoker means that your body is better able to recover and grow muscle every night you sleep.

Recovering From Smoking Instead of Growing

As mentioned earlier, smoking placed a big burden on the body and the body is in a constant battle to deal with its harmful effects and survive. This energy that the body spends counteracting the negative effects of smoking would be much better spent building muscle.

Smoking and Focus during Workouts

Smokers are less able to concentrate because they are in constant withdrawal from nicotine. This withdrawal starts a few minutes after their last cigarette and builds up as time goes by. Withdrawals usually get to a point where people start craving another cigarette after 30 minutes, which is why the average person smokes a box (20 cigarettes) a day. As time drags on, withdrawals intensify, leading to symptoms like thirst, moodiness, dropped sugar levels, lack of concentration etc. These withdrawals mean that smokers are generally not as able as non-smokers to focus 100% on their entire workout program.

Smokers Take Longer to Build Muscle and Reach Greater Levels of Fitness than Non-smokers

Can you grow muscle if you smoke? Yes. Can you get bigger muscles than most people who go to the gym if you smoke?  Yes. Can you compete in bodybuilding competitions and have a successful bodybuilding career as a smoker? Yes. Can you do all these things with the same amount of time and energy compared to if you didn’t smoke? No. You can still get there, but the road will be longer and tougher.

Rather quit smoking and give your body every fighting chance that you can to reach your goals as quick as possible. STAY STRONG!

Bodybuilding Makes You Smarter

Bodybuilding actually makes you smarter! You will do better at your studies, perform better at work and have greater cognitive power if you are a bodybuilder. Taking part in the sport will increase your overall IQ over time. Here is a list of reasons why.

The Better the Body, the Better the Brain

Our bodies are interconnected. Our physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual states are in-tune and dependent on one another. A mental state cannot work without a physical state. Therefore, the healthier our physical bodies are, the better we can perform mentally. Lifters work to improve their physical states and this leads to natural, healthy performance. Since our bodies are healthier and stronger than normal, our brains are housed in bodies that are more physically able to provide more for our mental needs. Having a body that is less challenging to physically sustain translates to having minds can run more freely without needing to adapt to physical demands like physical weakness and other bodily problems.

Bodybuilding Increases Blood Flow and Oxygen to the Brain

Physical exercise - especially high intensity exercise - increases our bodys ability to transport blood around the entire body, which benefits our brains without us even knowing it. The amount of oxygen we take in with each breath and the percentage of that that we can actually use increases as well, which means that there is more blood-rich oxygen for the brain to use. Ever heard of the concept that the deeper we breath in, the healthier and smarter we are? No need to walk around taking ridiculously large breaths all the time, simple exercise increases our blood flow and blood oxygen levels.

Bodybuilding Provides Escapism and Mental Breaks That Aid Brain Development

Over training is just as dangerous for the brain as it is for our bodies. Reading is a great means physical rest, just as exercising is a great way to rest your head whilst still advancing in life. These mental breaks give your brain a chance to rest, recover and recap on its current challenges before being used again to a higher intensity. The brain is a muscle which has a mental output instead of a physical or forceful output like the other muscles. Exercise is a great way to speed up mental recovery and adaption (growth) from daily stimuli and stresses placed on it.

Better Choices

The choices that bodybuilders make benefit their brains as well, although they make these choices to primarily better their bodies. Bodybuilders are more likely to drink less alcohol, avoid smoking and eat less junk food, which damages the brain. The choices we make which better our bodies are very likely to benefit our brains at the same time.

Bodybuilding Gives You a Goal

Bodybuilders have a great sense of purpose because they have goals that they achieve and then set new goals to work towards. This sense of purpose and sense of achievement after reaching predetermined goals are highly beneficial to our mental states. Our brain positively responds to these cycles and indirectly increases our mental confidence, performance, and refreshment.

Cures Mental Problems Before They Happen

Exercise is one of the best ways to fight depression - a mental condition - and people who take part in bodybuilding for a prolonged period of time are less likely to develop negative mental conditions later in life like depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, panic attacks, addiction, insomnia, paranoia, and personality disorders. Bodybuilding might be preventing you from getting an underlying mental condition that you would have experienced later on down the line if you didnt hit the gym.

Bodybuilding Keeps You Younger

We age as the cells in our bodies slowly lose their ability to regenerate and start to die off. Exercise slows down this process because through the challenges that exercise brings, we unknowingly reprogram our bodies to keep adapting to a stimulus and as a result our individual cells learn to regenerate at a faster pace. In the event of aging, it takes a longer time for our cells to lose their ability to regenerate and they start dying much later than usual if they if been put under an increased demand to regrow for longer periods of time (years). This is why medical aid schemes can determine your health status through an age test. The younger your body appears in this test, the healthier you are. Our brains are very susceptible to aging just like our bodies and physical appearance. Two people might be the same age, but their physical health will be different which means that their bodies are operating as if they are older or younger than usual. Bodybuilders undergo exercising and dieting regimes which reverse the aging process (unfortunately not faster than what will occur naturally) which brings benefits for minds as well as our bodies and appearance. Being able to operate as if you were younger means that you could have the bright mind of and 21 year old, even though you are 60 years old.

Bodybuilding Relieves Stress

Just like how the steam room could relieve stress placed on the body, exercise relieves mental stresses placed on us throughout the day. If these mental stresses and not relieved (like through exercise, relaxation, or social interaction), they can accumulate and lead to diminished cognitive function and even negative mental conditions mentioned above.

Bodybuilding Makes You Happier

Exercise releases endorphins, the brains happy hormone. Exercise also helps to eliminate stress hormones the brain releases when under stress (much like how our muscles release lactic acid when under stress). The endorphin release is what gives you that great on top of the world feeling when you leave the gym and is why some of us feel a little depressed when we dont work out for a few days. By regulating mental hormones like endorphin release and stress hormone elimination, regular exercise keeps your brain healthy and happy, allowing it to grow and develop to its best potential all the time, as well as preventing any negative build-up that might accumulate through time.

Higher Immunity = More Brain Growth Time

Bodybuilders generally have a higher immunity than other people and get sick less often, which is great for our heads. When we get sick, our brain development is slowed down as our bodies prioritize survival and fighting sickness instead of increasing our mental ability to respond to cognitive challenges. This is why it is harder to take in information, work, or pay attention when you are sick. The less time we are sick, the more time we have to stimulate our brains through social interaction, studies or work and the better our brains recover and grow as a response to that.

Nutrients!

The same nutrients that are great for our bodies are often favourable for our brains as well. Fish, protein, complex carbs, vitamins, glutamine, and veggies which are a large part of bodybuilding diets are fantastic nutrient sources for the brain as well. Exercise increases the absorption and utility of these nutrients in the blood stream, which makes them more available for our brain just as much as these nutrients are readily available for the rest if our bodies to use.

So there you have it. Bodybuilding makes you smarter!

Make a Career out of Bodybuilding

It is possible to get rich doing what you love, and bodybuilding is no different. However, there are so many people trying to make a career out of this sport and the industry is not big enough to support everybody.
(That is primarily why I started this blog, as a means to grow the bodybuilding industry in South Africa. The bigger the industry gets and the more people get involved, bigger companies are going to need people like US BODYBUILDERS to help them get in on the growing market.)

A bodybuilding career is very different to any other career for many reasons:
-          It is not (and should not be regarded as) a normal job where you get paid a monthly salary for performing a set of tasks or duties.
-          Your success depends on working with as many different companies and organisations as possible. It’s not like you simply pass one interview and you’re set on your way to success.
-          Unlike other careers, you will be discriminated against according to the way you look.
-          More so than other careers, you need to develop your personal brand (physically, and in the industry) as if you are the actual product you trying to sell.

Strategy 1: Get Obsessed!
If you’re that guy that waits for years until he finally feels like he’s big enough to compete, and then competes once a year hoping that someone is going to spot (pun intended) him and throw money at him, chances are almost definite that you arent going to make a single cent in this industry. There are thousands of people in SA hunting down companies that use brand ambassadors and you’re sitting in the locker room hoping that they will come to you?  Or waiting for a good opportunity to come by before you actually do something? Start doing things now, so that when you are ready all the prep stuff is done and you can attack the market, head on. Become A LOT more aggressive in your attempts to more than double your chances of success. Becoming obsessed means that you are prepared to sacrifice a large part of your life for this (If not, stop now and don’t waste your time thinking you’ll get anywhere). Every day that doesnt bring you closer to your goal is a day wasted. If you only do something about your dreams once a week, you will take 7X as long as it could take to get you where you want to be. You can get closer to your goal everyday by doing things that you wouldnt think you needed to do until it’s too late. For example, what skills do you need that you currently do not have? Have you practiced your poses in front of the mirror so much that its second nature, preventing disastrous slip-ups on stage? Have you practiced your facial expressions for when you get that envious magazine shoot? Have you worked on building your confidence so that your nerves don’t destroy your chances of winning? Bookmark this page and refer to it often to make sure you are constantly improving to get better and better than the next bloke.

Strategy 2: Know Key Players!
What do you want to become and who are the people that currently hold positions that you want? It is good to know their stories and how they got to where they are. If the guy that is currently doing what you dream of doing walks past you in the gym or at an event, would you even know? Knowing who the key players are helps you to direct and steer your networking attempts towards these people. You also need to know the organizers of events like bodybuilding competitions and their judges. Some top performers even research who the judges of a competition will be and change their stage costumes accordingly. How nice would it be to know that the current judges of a competition generally score higher on athletes wearing red? It sounds crazy, but it works. Do you know which companies currently sponsor bodybuilding events, which organisations sponsor athletes like you, what they look for in brand ambassadors, and who the people are that they hire to select those few lucky individuals? Having contacts in other industries that could complement your career endeavors will be of monumental help to you. Imagine knowing the journalist or editors that could cover your story in a magazine or newspaper!

Strategy 3: Learn About the Industry!
Who are the top 5 most successful players in this industry in South Africa? How did they get there? Chances are you can’t answer those questions, and neither can the other 98% of people who won’t succeed here. Those top 5 knew the answers to questions like that before they made it big. Knowing the industry is a pre-requirement to getting through the door, and being obsessed with it helps you get further than the rest. Reading articles like this when you have nothing to do at work or because you’re bored, browsing the internet is just not good enough to get to the top (keep reading though!). People think you just grow by going to the gym and they don’t know about all the work you actually put in like training programs, research, eating plans, supplements and everything else. Similarly, people don’t train until they are big enough, walk onto a stage and become world-famous. It takes a whole lot a research and planning. How many bodybuilding competitions are there in your area? Who would sponsor you? How much do people get sponsored for? What opportunities exist in the market right now? How will you add value to this industry that people/companies/organisations would pay for? What streams of revenue are you going to earn from?

Strategy 4: Network!
The more people you know and the more contacts you can make in the industry, the higher your chances of success. Many people overlook this strategy and think that they can just make the right contacts when they need to; they can Google who they need to know or they simply don’t need to meet more people to further their careers. The percentage of top players who got to where they are completely due to the people they knew is actually quite startling. In fact, it is almost impossible to get anywhere without knowing the right people and without the right relationships. Please notice how people on the bottom seem to know nobody, and the people at the top are well connected. Is this a coincidence? Most surely not! Start by making friendships with whoever you can, such as people who also want to make a career out of bodybuilding (chances are they know of a great opportunity that you don’t). It might sound silly to make friends with the guy who is reselling supplements on the corner, until he asks you to be the face of his brand in the shop he just took over and online with all his marketing! It is very important to prioritize networking as one of the core strategies for success.

Strategy 5: Get Involved!
If doing bodybuilding competitions is just a fun hobby of yours that you do every now and then, there is nothing wrong with that. But if you want to make an actual career out of it, you are going to need to do a lot more. You need to get extremely involved in the industry by going to competitions even when you are not competing, by going to the finalist events even if you didnt make it and by attending all events associated with this trade. Here you will learn a lot of valuable information, meet with important people, make surprisingly helpful contacts, find out about great opportunities, discover other ways to achieve your goals and reinforce the burning fire that you need to push your way upwards. Ive met some great contacts in events I didnt even take part in, for example I met a journo who does stories on up and coming stars in the industry. Imagine getting a significant interview that will help your career, at an event you werent even competing in! You hear about success stories about people who got lucky by meeting the right person at the right time that jump-started their path to success. What you don’t hear is that they were so obsessed that they were constantly at events like these. You’re not going to meet anyone worthwhile when watching TV at home.

Strategy 6: Get a Relevant Job!
You might want to be the next Arnold Schwarzenegger, but you are going to need to start right at the bottom. Getting a job in the same trade is not essential, but will definitely help a lot in many ways. Many people who compete are personal trainers, and you will especially do better with your personal training job as you increase your ranks in competitions. Plenty people who are relatively successful on stage use their success to exponentially increase their earnings with their personal training jobs. Their pro-status means that they can charge tonnes more for personal training sessions and even coach other people on how to compete in the same competitions. Try to get whatever job you can in the industry, so that you have a steady stream of income until you cash in the mega bucks. Staying in the industry on a 9-5 basis gives you a better competitive edge than the people who spend most of each day NOT in the industry. That means your chances of making great contacts, learning about current opportunities, getting sponsored etc. are much, much higher.

Strategy 7: Enter as Many Bodybuilding Competitions as Possible
This should be obvious, but you want as much exposure as possible. You can enter as many competitions as you want, until you do well in one of them and you get a pro card. When you become a pro at a competition, they will issue you with a pro card. This pro card is coveted by many competitors. You cannot enter bodybuilding competitions by other organisations once you have a pro card. You are then restricted to only entering into that specific competition.
It is a good idea to enter these competitions even when you don’t feel like you are at your best or ready yet. This is because the more competitions you do the better you will be at it. See the competitions that you don’t feel too confident about as practice for the future. Having a few competitions under your belt and attending them regularly to keep in the swing of things will add to your overall performance and placement in the long run. Do not limit yourself to bodybuilding competitions; try some modelling competitions as well. These might open new doors and opportunities for you.

Here a list of bodybuilding competitions in South Africa

Strategy 8: Attack the Media!
Try to get into the media whenever you can. You can definitely use this coverage as good leverage later on to further your success. Make friends with journalists and editors from different forms of media like TV, radio, newspapers, and magazines. The media is often very open to doing articles on new athletes who are entering into competitions. This exposure might lead to greater exposure or even land you that sponsor that you need. A judge who reads your article in the newspaper will more likely notice you on stage above the others. Self-promotion is essential to building and establishing your brand above the rest and should be done from the very start. Your wins look a lot bigger if your journey has been in the eye of the media from the start. It is too late to try to attract extra media attention if you only start AFTER doing well in a competition.

Strategy 9: Build a portfolio!
In the beginning there won’t be anybody promoting you. Nobody who you want to reach will know you. It is YOUR job to change that. Build a portfolio with your information, pictures and past successes. This portfolio is basically an advert with the goal of persuading the reader to buy into the product you are selling (you are that product). Keep copies of this on hand and take it with you wherever you go. Try to get this in front of as many people as possible. It is your job to somehow get the right people to see your portfolio, and you better make sure that it is so good that after seeing it they can’t resist not paying you to promote them!
Self-promote yourself as much as you can and wherever you can! Make a Facebook and Twitter page and get as many followers as possible. You want to try and build your name into an authority that people want to copy. You need to build yourself into the person that others want to become. As soon as you do this, sponsors will start looking for you!

Strategy 10: Contact as Many Companies and people as Possible!
Single out the companies that you would like to be sponsored by and get in their faces! They should be forced to see your portfolio just to shut you up. If somebody sees your portfolio and rejects it, found out why. If you can find out what is wrong or missing, you can make the right changes to increase your chances of success the next time. People tend to send their portfolio to one company they like through an email and stop there, ‘waiting for a reply’. Don’t fall into this trap. Getting accepted is more of a numbers game. You can have your favorite companies that you would like to work with, but you are going to need to submit your portfolio to as many companies as possible. Chasing your dream should be seen as a full time job, and that means putting some serious effort into contacting as many companies as possible. Try many avenues to get your foot in the door. Keep your eye on these companies; and see whether and when they have competitions with sponsorships as prizes. Offering to volunteer with events these companies hold is another sure way to get you noticed above the masses of other people trying to grab their attention.

Try to establish good working relationships with photographers. When building their own portfolios, photographers often ask for models to pose for free. This is a good idea because you can also use these professionally taken photos for your own portfolio, and you will appear in the photographers’ portfolios when they show it to their clients. Volunteering as a model is also very good experience for posing in photo shoots. Rather mess up in front of an amateur than right in the middle of your dream shoot! Contact many photographers, it is better to work with a number of them than just one!
